Open source parts of the council software

The council has a limited budget to spend on tech improvements. I imagine the council will end up paying large amounts to some contracting company to do it. There are already people in the borough that work in software, so why not leverage them? If you open sourced some parts of the software you use, residents could contribute and improve the software itself, saving you money and also giving residents ownership.

  1. This is a very good suggestion.

We have, as part of signing up to the Local Digital Declaration, committed to more coding in the open and more use of open source. In a local authority context it’s not always easy – there is a lot of legacy and a lot of proprietary casework systems. But where we can, we will most certainly be moving to open standards, open repositories and open source.
